There comes a point in some actors’ careers when they are faced with a big choice. Will they or will they not take it all off for their next big movie role?
Nudity continues to be a hot topic in Hollywood, especially when it comes to the big screen. Of course, it immediately gets people’s attention, and if viewers like what they see, a nude scene could significantly boost an actor’s career. Of course, the scene has to be done tastefully in order for the celebrity to be taken seriously as an actor. Even still, how much is too much? After all, actors want to be known for more than just their bodies when they’re auditioning for new roles.
Deciding to be naked on screen for millions to see is not an easy choice, even for people who are pretty comfortable with their bodies. There are even a few actors who may have been fine with on-screen nudity before, but have now decided that taking it all off in the movies is no longer their best career move. Here are 12 celebrities who have now refused to get naked on screen.
12. Casey Wilson
11. Pamela Anderson
Pamela Anderson has worn next to nothing for most of her career. She’ll always be known as a Baywatch babe, and has posed for Playboy, in addition to many other racy photo shoots. There’s also that “movie” she made with then-husband Tommy Lee. Even though Anderson and Lee’s honeymoon tape was leaked years ago, it’s still one of the most watched videos on the Internet. Anderson has stated that she regrets appearing naked so often in her career. She stated that at the time, she didn’t think about the fact that she may be a mom one day. Pamela has also said that her sons have been made fun of her because of her previous choices. That likely has a lot to do with the fact that Anderson has gotten more involved in causes like Animal Rights, and she’s dressing more modestly these days.
10. Jessica Brown Findlay
Before she became famous for her role as Lady Sybil on Downton Abbey, Jessica Brown Findlay appeared in a movie entitled Albatros. By “appeared”, we mean most of her appeared on screen with no clothing. Findlay states that she was naive to participate in the movie, and wasn’t aware that she could refuse to do nude scenes. She also states that she didn’t know that her entire body would be exposed, and thought she would only be shot from behind. Luckily, she’s in her early 20s, so she has plenty of time to redeem herself. She seems to be doing pretty well so far.
9. Natalie Portman
Actress Natalie Portman is well known for her role in Black Swan, but she also appeared in the movies Goya’s Ghosts and Hotel Chevalier, in which she was at least partially nude. Portman states that she should have “listened to her intuition” and refused to do the nude scenes. She later told MTV News that she doesn’t have any regrets, but that she was angry about the fact that clips of the scenes in which she was nude found their way to adult sites. Obviously, that wasn’t the type of artistic point she was trying to get across. Portman stated that “sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is say no,” and that will likely be her answer if she’s ever asked to be naked in a movie again.
8. Eva Green
French model and actress Eva Green, is known for her role in Casino Royale, a movie she was originally supposed to be nude in. She refused to get naked on screen for Casino Royale, since she’d just bared it all on screen for her previous project, The Dreamers. Green stated that being naked in a movie was “very troubling” for her, and that she was glad the producers agreed that she didn’t have to be completely naked for Casino Royale. Eva also revealed that she was asked to strip down to her underwear for a shower scene, and had a heated debate with the movie executives about it.
7. Ben Stiller
Remember when actor Ben Stiller bared his backside in the movie Along Came Polly (which also starred Jennifer Aniston)? Well, Stiller admits that he really wasn’t comfortable with that, which likely took the producers by surprise, since Stiller is usually willing to do what it takes to get a laugh. The actor was told by director John Hamburg that the scene would be deleted from the movie if people didn’t find it funny. After Stiller shot the scene, he was told that he could have had a body double. Perhaps that was the production staff’s way of playing a practical joke on him. This just goes to show you that women aren’t the only ones uncomfortable with being nude on screen.
6. Esme Bianco
Esme Bianco, the actress who is known for her work on the popular drama Game of Thrones,
has decided that she no longer wants to go topless. According to
Bianco’s co-star Oona Chaplin, Esme wants to be known for her talent and
her work, not for her breasts. During the first season of Game of Thrones,
Bianco was naked quite often, so it’s likely that she doesn’t feel
comfortable being so closely associated with nudity. Fans of the show
originally thought Chaplin was referring to Emilia Clarke
in relation to the “no more nudity claims.” Clarke later clarified her
alleged statements, saying that she’s “always in control” and doesn’t
want to do nude scenes that don’t serve the story well. Esme Bianco
stated that since she was also doing burlesque shows when she starting
working on Game of Thrones, she didn’t want to be seen as “that naked girl.”
5. Kate Winslet
Kate Winslet bared it all for her role in The Reader. However, after the movie was released, she stated that she likely won’t be appearing in any more movies nude. She states that she doesn’t think she can keep “getting away with it.” Winslet also says that she doesn’t want to be known as the actress who “always gets her kit off.” We’re pretty sure that has something to do with always being naked on film to get attention. After all, the Titanic actress is a Golden Globe and Academy Award winner (she’s an Emmy winner, too), and she doesn’t want unnecessary nude scenes to alter the prestige that has come with her acting accomplishments.
4. Mary Louise Parker
The actress, who is most well known for her roles on R.I.P.D. and Weeds, has admitted that she’s “almost done acting.” After she appeared nude in a bathtub scene on Weeds, she was really unhappy with all the “feedback” she got online. Parker states that she fought with the director about the scene and didn’t think it was necessary before it was shot. Online critics had a lot to say about her breasts, and since no one really likes being critiqued so extensively, this likely helped to confirm her decision to retire from acting. Parker states that if she indeed retires, she’ll spend her time writing, taking care of her kids, baking and “throwing the Internet in the lake.” Sounds like a solid plan.
3. Taylor Lautner
Taylor Lautner made his screen debut when he was just a kid in the movie The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D. Since then, he’s become pretty popular for his role as Jacob in the Twilight movies. Of course, part of the reason for his fame in these films is the fact that he took his shirt off. While a number of women would likely disagree, Lautner states that being shirtless was a mistake. He even went as far as to say that if it were up to him, he would never remove his shirt in a movie again. Apparently, Taylor wants to be recognized for his acting talent, and not his well-toned abs.
2. Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie has not only given up nude scenes, but in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2014, Jolie stated that she planned on giving up acting altogether. Angelina, who is known around the world as a Hollywood bombshell/sex symbol, has admitted that she’s never felt completely comfortable in front of the camera. She could have fooled us, since she appeared topless in both Gia and Original Sin. Obviously, Jolie’s priorities have changed significantly in the past few years, since she’s become a mother and is raising a family with her husband Brad Pitt. Jolie has also had a double mastectomy to reduce her risk of breast cancer (it runs in her family), which likely has a lot to do with why she’s no longer doing nude scenes.
1. Helen Mirren
Veteran actress Helen Mirren has recently announced that she will no longer be doing topless or nude scenes in movies. Mirren has appeared in a number of films, but she is especially remembered for the fearlessness she showed when she was topless on screen in the movie Calendar Girls. That’s not the first time she’s bared it all on screen. Mirren has been showing off her…assets for quite some time, and her initial “debut” was in Age of Consent, in 1969. Helen Mirren, who is 70, stated that as actors get older, there’s less of an expectation to be naked on screen. She’s made it clear that her “pleasure pillows” are now only for her husband to see.
